The original KhNURE building, designed in the Constructivist style, was constructed between 1930 and 1932 by architect Y. Steinberg for the Kharkiv Institute of Construction and Architecture.

During World War II, the building sustained serious damage and was rebuilt in the “Stalinist Empire” style in 1952, based on a design by Noi Podgorny.

At that time, the building housed the Kharkiv Mining and Industrial Institute.

In 1962, the Kharkiv Institute of Mining Engineering, Automation, and Computer Science was established on the basis of the Mining Institute. In 1966, it was reorganized into the Kharkiv Institute of Radio Electronics (KIRE).

Since 2001, it has been known as Kharkiv National University of Radio Electronics (KhNURE).

In 2010, a monument to a student programmer was erected in the courtyard of KhNURE; the sculptor was Roman Blazhko.

The building was damaged in a Russian missile strike on January 2, 2024, and lost some of its windows.
