A small selection of Kharkiv’s most famous large clocks.
1. The clock on the modern bell tower of the Assumption Cathedral was installed in 1862; it was purchased in France from the Parisian firm “Borel.” Incidentally, online sources mention only the Swiss firm Borel, founded in 1856 in Neuchâtel, so we’ll leave the question of who actually made the clock open for historians to investigate. In the 1890s, the clock was equipped with an electric drive.

But today, the bell tower features a different clock, installed in the late 1950s or early 1960s…
The clock was damaged as a result of a Russian missile strike on the Palace of Labor on March 2, 2022.
2. Kharkiv’s largest clock is located on the left tower of the Kharkiv Railway Station; it has a diameter of 4.25 meters. The current station building was constructed in 1952.
3. The clock on the building at Universytets’ka Street, 9, (1952). This clock is not operational.
4. This clock was installed on the main building of Kharkiv University during its renovation in the 1940s and 1950s.
5. You can also see a huge dial barometer next to them. The Kharkiv National University clock is unusual—it’s a chime clock that strikes the hour every hour during the day. In 2005, it underwent a major renovation, and a couple of years ago, the Kharkiv club of law enforcement veterans “General,” together with the FED factory, restored the chimes.
6. The clock in Sarzhin Yar (installed in 2012), under the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God “Joy and Comfort”;
7. The clocks on the new tower of Kharkiv National Economic University (built in 2015). The dials of the last two clocks are illuminated at night.
8. The clock on the thermometer near the exit of the “Historical Museum” metro station. The thermometer with the clock has been restored several times, most recently in 2012.
