The Kovriga House

The “Four Rooms” hotel building at Mykoly Khvylovoho Street, 5 is a rare example of a relatively successful modern addition designed in the style of the original, historic building. The building was originally a two-story structure; it was built in 1895 and had an additional story added in the 2000s.

According to the 1901 and 1909 property owner lists, the house at this address (which was then called Hospital Street, and from 1935 to 2023 Mayakovsky Street) was owned by Evdokia Dmitrievna Kovriga, the widow of a State Councilor. However, there is no certainty that there was no mix-up with the addresses.

In any case, it would be nice if all the signs on the facades of Kharkiv’s buildings were designed with the same restraint, and if the additions didn’t spoil their original appearance.
