"Utro," March 8, 1912

It was the morning of March 8, 1912… Frau Clara Eisner was already 55 years old, but Kharkiv didn’t even know she existed.
Nine days had passed since Delarue’s death…
A Hungarian orchestra is playing at the Astrakhan Hotel…
And at the Polish House, a distinctly Polish event is taking place—“Caucasian Evening”…
Maxim Gorky is writing about nationalism…
And much, much more…

The Return of V. I. Kravtsov. Yesterday, V. I. Kravtsov, acting mayor of Kharkiv, returned to Kharkiv from St. Petersburg. V. I. Kravtsov had traveled to St. Petersburg on business related to Kharkiv city affairs. V. I. Kravtsov, in agreement with the St. Petersburg International Bank, has developed a specimen for the bonds of the six-million loan. The bonds have already been ordered and will be ready in May. The Ministry of Internal Affairs has approved additional terms for the loan’s implementation. V. I. Kravtsov was informed that the Ministry of Public Education had approved a request to grant Kharkiv an additional allocation of 4,160 rubles; this increase in the allocation was granted, as is known, due to an increase in the number of classes in Kharkiv’s city schools from 92 to 103. Regarding the issue of authorizing the Kharkiv city government to place foreign orders for pipe alternators for the new power plant, a favorable opinion has been received from the Main Directorate for Local Economy.

Indoor market.

At the most recent meeting of the construction committee on the indoor market, one of the issues discussed was whether the indoor market should be built on concrete piles or on a continuous reinforced concrete slab. The commission decided to refer this matter to experts for discussion. In addition, the commission determined that it was not feasible to award the construction contract to a single entity and to build the market on a turnkey basis; it was decided to construct the market in-house, outsourcing the remaining work as deemed appropriate: using either the commission’s own materials or those provided by contractors, and engaging individual contractors based on their areas of expertise.

M. Gorky on Nationalism.

M. Gorky published an interesting article on nationalism in *Russkoe Slovo*:

“I don’t really believe in the ‘awakening of the national spirit,’ but, knowing my fellow countrymen, I’ll concede this much: we are a people full of the most sudden and unexpected twists and turns, and we have not yet suffered through the teething pains of nationalism.”
