Popov’s eight-unit apartment building was constructed in 1912–1913 according to a design by architect Serhii Tymoshenko.

The Ukrainian Art Nouveau style, in which the architect specialized, is clearly evident in the trapezoidal windows, the ornamentation, and the tower with canted silhouette. However, the tower was originally even larger and taller; it was reconstructed in a simplified form after a fire in 1987.

But gray doesn’t suit this house; it seems to have acquired that color during the many renovations of the 20th century.

It is heartening to see that the original frames of many of the windows have been preserved.

The brickwork on the side walls and the upper rear section of the house is also quite interesting—here you can find octagonal “solar” stars.

Researchers believe that the roof was originally covered with tiles.
