Lutheran Orphanage

You can find many “hidden treasures” in the courtyards of Kharkiv’s streets. This house is located in the courtyards at Hryhoriia Skovorody Street, 53b (the entrance is through the archway of the Pharmaceutical University building). The attic with a roof was added relatively recently, and efforts were made to blend it into the building’s overall style.

The building was constructed in the 1890s to house a Lutheran orphanage, which had been founded by the community in 1870. The old orphanage buildings that stood on this site were no longer large enough to accommodate the necessary number of orphaned children and elderly Lutheran women.
