The property at Chobotars’ka Street, 19 was listed in the 1901 owners’ list under the name of Maria Alekseyevna Zhmudskaya, the wife of a merchant.

She was the mother of Barbara Andreevna Karinska, who was most likely born here and spent her childhood here.

Numerous articles and studies have been written about the woman from Kharkiv who emigrated to the United States and won an Academy Award for her costume design for the film *Joan of Arc* (1948).
