Back in 1894, after Bering and Ru discovered the antidiphtheria serum, the Kharkiv Medical Society decided to organize the production of this medication in Kharkiv. By early 1895, the institute already had diphtheria antiserum of its own production. To produce the serum, two horses were purchased in 1894. As demand for the diphtheria antiserum continued to rise, the number of horses used for production was increased to 20 the following year.
One of these horses is immortalized in the historical and reference guide *Kharkiv: Its Past and Present in Illustrations and Descriptions*, published by the Adolf Darre Printing House in 1902.
Horse No. 17 (Pop), used for the production of antidiphtheria serum at the Kharkiv Medical Society Institute from May 10, 1897, to April 1902. During this time, 42 bloodlettings were performed and 294 liters of blood were collected, from which up to 40,000 therapeutic doses of serum were produced.
