One of the most striking buildings at the beginning of Sumska Street is the former Kharitonov apartment building.

The six-story building was built in 1913.

This architectural landmark was designed by architect A. Gorokhov in Art Nouveau style.

The sculptures adorning the windows on the second floor are particularly noteworthy.

Originally, the ground floor of the building housed the “Ampir” movie theater, which was opened by the building’s owner, Dmitry Ivanovich Kharitonov. It was the largest movie theater in Kharkiv.

Until 2008, the former “Ampir” venue housed the “1st Komsomolsky” movie theater. A distinctive feature of the theater was that its seats were arranged without a raised amphitheater-style platform, and there was a bar at the back of the auditorium.
