St. Nicholas Church, located in the historic Kharkiv neighbourhood of Grigorivka, was built in 1820.

The architect was Yevgeny Alekseyevich Vasilyev, a professor of architecture at the Imperial University of Kharkiv, known for his designs of university buildings. The Kharkiv Diocese website states that the church was a standard design, and that the first, wooden church appeared here as early as 1765… The 1904 reference book of the Kharkiv Diocese, in addition to the year of construction (1820), it is also noted that St. Nicholas Church was built with funds from Colonel Alexander Norov, and the congregation consisted of 1,092 men and 1,022 women. According to this reference book, it was still 5 versts from the then-Grigorivka to the borders of Kharkiv; now, however, the church is within the city limits, located at Tsementna Street, 6.

The 20th century saw tragic events in the church’s history: in 1938, Deacon Philip Mikhailovich Ordynts was arrested and executed as a “member of a monarchist organization.” Today, he is counted among the holy new martyrs of the Sloboda region.

The church was returned to the congregation in 1989 and has since been restored. Its walls used to be painted pink, but now they have a more pleasing pastel shade. There is a spring on the church grounds. The church is built in the Neoclassical style, which was very common in the early 19th century.
