“Saltovsky” Round Market

Round markets became a common building of 1970s Soviet architectural modernism. The largest in Ukraine is located in Sumy (with a diameter of over 100 meters); there are also round markets in Cherkasy, Kharkiv, Kyiv, and Rivne. The latter four were designed by Ukrainian architects Alla Anishchenko and Natalia Chmutina (Kyiv ZNIIEP); it is the same project.

The “Saltovsky” indoor collective farm market was built in 1979–80 at Heroiv Truda Street, 15. The site integration was carried out by architects V. Bakhtina and O. Dunaeva. The circular structure, lacking central support columns, resembles an openwork basket constructed from prefabricated triangular reinforced concrete elements.

In 2021, the market was renovated by the “Rost” supermarket chain; the glazing was replaced with tinted glass, but overall, the recognizability of its original appearance has been fully preserved
