In the building at Universytets’ka Street, 10—a familiar sight to many Kharkiv residents—a spinning workshop and a store belonging to the “Gillard Manufactory” haberdashery firm, owned by Gille and Dietrich, were located in the late 19th century.

The building itself has been renovated several times, but that’s not the point.

The building, constructed in 1858, was renovated in 1889 by architect V. Nemkin and in 1912 again by V. Pokrovsky. Photo: Ivan Ponomarenko, 2018

The product range offered by the Gille and Dietrich company was quite interesting:

– linen goods;
– table linens;
– hosiery;
– men’s and women’s underwear;
– trousseau items

And it was at this very store that many women in Kharkiv did their shopping.

The building houses the Ecclesiastical History Museum of the Kharkiv Diocese and a coworking space. Photo: Ivan Ponomarenko, 2018

We don’t know what the interior of the Kharkiv store looked like.

However, judging by the Moscow catalog of the “Girardot Manufactory” from the same period, we can say that the interior of the Kharkiv store was no less magnificent…
