Kulakovsky’s haberdashery

The northern section of Rizdviana Street is lined with factory buildings and warehouses. Yet there is no sense of an ‘industrial’ atmosphere here – these buildings were designed with such taste that their Art Nouveau, Eclectic or even Neo-Gothic façades would be the envy of many of the townhouses in the city centre. For example, the haberdashery warehouse of D. G. Kulakovsky’s factory, built in 1914 to a design by the city’s renowned Art Nouveau master, architect Oleksandr Rzhepishevskyi. According to research published by HeMo: Ukrainian Heritage Monitoring Lab, the building’s load-bearing frame was made of reinforced concrete, the internal walls of timber, and the bas-reliefs on the columns feature original figures in Ukrainian folk costume.

The building’s current address is Rizdviana Street, 19. It is now home to the Educational and Research Institute of Energy and Computer Technologies at the State University of Biotechnology.

The building was severely damaged by Russian shelling in the spring of 2022 and again in January 2024. Almost all the interior walls, partitions, the roof and the glazing in the building were damaged.
