The Kharkiv TV Tower, which was severely damaged by a Russian missile strike on 22 April 2024, was a landmark for the people of Kharkiv. It could be seen from many parts of the city.

In the panorama visible from Lysa Hora, it resembled a rocket about to take off.

Kharkiv’s tallest structure (240.7 m) was completed by 1981. The Kharkiv TV Tower was designed by the same Ukrainian Institute of Steel Structures named after V. M. Shimanovsky that designed Ukraine’s tallest TV tower—the Kyiv TV Tower.

The final 100 meters of the Kharkiv TV Tower were assembled using an Mi-10K helicopter crane. These were 10-ton sections. The tower was used to transmit radio, television, and mobile communication signals.

The Kharkiv TV tower was the sixth tallest in Ukraine—taller than it were the aforementioned Kyiv TV tower (380 m), the Donetsk TV mast (360.5 m), the Vinnytsia TV mast (354 m), the Rivne TV mast (354 m), and the Novodnestrovsk tower (259 m).

The Kharkiv TV Tower was damaged by a Russian bombing raid on 6 March 2022. On that occasion, a Su-34 aircraft with registration number RF-95070 was shot down and crashed on the grounds of an Karkiv aircraft factory; one pilot was killed, and the other was taken prisoner.
