Hidden Treasures

The city often hides treasures in its courtyards—small two-story houses with beautiful, if somewhat weathered, entranceways. For example, the building in the courtyard at Voznesenska Street, 5B (formerly Feuerbach Street) is unremarkable from the outside but fascinating on the inside, especially in terms of its well-preserved stucco work.

According to researcher Andriy Paramonov, the houses at Voznesenska Street, 5 and 5b were part of a complex of buildings belonging to a city estate that was built in the mid-19th century. Its owner in the 1850s was Alexander Sievers, who served as vice-governor of the Kharkiv Governorate from 1854 to 1855 and as governor of the Kharkiv Governorate from 1862 to 1866. Princess Trubetskaya became the next owner in 1855.

It is believed that the facades and interiors of the buildings were renovated in the Art Nouveau style around the beginning of the 20th century.
