Way back in 1885, the talented entrepreneur Alexei Sergeyevich Suvorin opened his third store in our beloved city.
Without exaggeration, this was a “book supermarket” where you could buy absolutely anything, located in a building at Yekaterinoslavskaya Street, 1 (now Poltavskyi Shliakh), a place familiar to many Kharkiv residents.
The store attracted numerous customers from the southern provinces not only because of its extensive selection, but also because it received new books every week and offered a discount program.
Suvorin was constantly “stepping up” his own book business.
In addition to a chain of bookstores, he also owned his own publishing company and a newspaper, and held the exclusive right to sell published materials on railroads and at docks. But even that was not enough for the insatiable “book king.”
Suvorin was behind a number of purely entrepreneurial initiatives. Among them was the establishment of Russia’s first agency for the distribution of printed materials. It was said that at that time there was no province, port, or railroad station that did not have a “A.S. Suvorin Agency” kiosk selling books and periodicals.
Over time, “A.S. Suvorin & Co.” became Russia’s largest publisher of scenic postcards.
In the first half of the 20th century, the aforementioned publishing house, in particular, released this remarkable postcard, which still tells us so much about our beloved Kharkiv…
