Congratulations, Kharkiv-style

On this bright day of Christ’s Resurrection, many of us will be congratulating one another on this wonderful holiday.

In the old days, not everyone could do this in person. And, as we know, there were no phones or the Internet back then.

Exactly 118 years ago, in 1898, the first artistic postcards were published in the Russian Empire on the eve of Easter. The postcards featured Easter-themed designs.

The creator of these colorful and original postcards, which enabled thousands of people to exchange the traditional greeting “Christ is Risen!” despite the distance between them, was a nobleman from the Kharkiv Governorate, the grandson of the founder of Kharkiv University, and the renowned artist Nikolai Nikolaevich Karazin.

That’s the kind of contribution—albeit a small one—our fellow townspeople have made to this joyful day. So, let’s congratulate one another today in the Kharkiv way.
Christ is Risen!
