Back in 1889, the latest edition of the *Kharkiv Calendar* was published. This publication was compiled by the Kharkiv Provincial Statistical Committee.
This book served as a very useful reference guide for both Kharkiv residents and visitors alike. After all, as we all know, there was no radio, no television, and no internet back then.
However, what interests us most about the 1889 “Kharkiv Calendar” is the color map included in it. It was created by G. Kulizhinsky, a postal and telegraph official.
What made this map of Kharkiv unique was that it showed the telephone networks, including subscriber numbers, as well as the city’s post and telegraph offices and mailboxes for depositing mail.
Thanks to the highly detailed labels identifying telephone lines and phones, we can learn many interesting things about the past of our beloved city.
