A house without a spire

One of the largest buildings near the Kharkiv Railway Station is the house located at Poltavskyi Shliakh Street, 57/59.

It was built in 1956 according to a design by architects V. Donskoy and V. Vyrodov for the employees of the “Krasny Oktyabr” Machine-Building Plant (known as the Pilstrem Plant before the revolution and now as the “PLINFA” Plant).

The building blocked off Rubanovsky Lane, which had previously led to Poltavskyi Shliakh (now a dead end); the elegant side facade of the neighboring “House with Parrots” was also obscured, as if it had been squeezed between the two large structures.

The main section of the building is seven stories tall; at the corner, it is topped by a ten-story tower that is sorely lacking a spire.

The spire may have been part of the original design, but its construction was canceled following the well-known decree issued by the Soviet authorities, “On the Elimination of Excesses in Design and Construction” (1955).

The decor features stars and cornucopias.
