Well, today we recommend reading something by one of the classics before bed—Turgenev, for example. He also wrote about our hometown in his works. In the short story “Chertopkhanov and Nedopuskyn,” we come across the following description of the Kharkiv landowner Khryaka-Khrupersky:
He once read in the “Moscow Gazette” a short article by the Kharkiv landowner Khryak-Khrupersky on the benefits of morality in peasant life, and the very next day he ordered all the peasants to immediately memorize the Kharkiv landowner’s article. The peasants memorized the article; the master asked them: Do they understand what is written there? The steward replied, “How could we not understand!” Around the same time, he ordered all his subjects, for the sake of order and economic efficiency, to be renumbered and to have their number sewn onto their collars. Whenever they met the landlord, everyone would shout, “Number such-and-such here!” And the master would reply kindly, “Go in peace!”
