In the 1886 issue of the journal *Vsemirnaya Illyustratsiya*, we find a very interesting article about the opening of the Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute on September 15, 1886.
Its main value to us lies in the fact that the author was clearly present at the aforementioned event himself, allowing us to see the occasion through his eyes—eyes that viewed the world on September 15, 1886…
On September 15, a consecration and opening ceremony was held in Kharkiv for the Technological Institute, whose building is depicted in our illustration. The modest celebration began with a prayer service conducted in the institute’s auditorium by Bishop Ambrose, assisted by three archpriests. His Eminence offered words of encouragement to the students, and then the trustee of the educational district delivered a speech, urging the young people to work honestly and tirelessly in their chosen field of technical education. The ceremony concluded with the singing of the national anthem, accompanied by a loud “hurrah” from those present. Mayor I. Fesenko sent the following telegram to State Secretary M. H. Reiter (former Minister of Finance): “Today marked the opening of the Technological Institute in our city. On behalf of my fellow citizens, I consider it my duty to express to Your Excellency my sincere gratitude for your efforts in establishing the institute in our city.” In addition, the following telegram was sent to Minister of Finance N. H. Bunge: “Today marked the consecration of the building and the opening of the Technological Institute. On behalf of the city, I consider it my duty to express our deep gratitude to Your Excellency for your efforts in opening the institute in our city.”
