"Church of St. Demetrius of Selun, the Great Martyr and Myrrh-Giver, in Kharkiv" by Ioann Chizhevsky

A small book, only 47 pages long. “What kind of facts could there possibly be in it?” I thought, looking at the book *The Church of St. Demetrius of Selun, the Great Martyr and Myrrh-Giver, in Kharkiv*, written by Archpriest Ioann Chizhevsky in 1901.

However, sometimes it’s really nice to be wrong. I was surprised and delighted by the amount of useful information. It’s only about 47 pages long, yet it contains so many fascinating details about our city and the church on Poltavskyi Shlyakh.

The lists of icons and donors are simply delightful. Ah… if only I had the time to organize and refine all of this. Still, I think anyone who loves Kharkiv will enjoy this book. Enjoy reading it!

The devout residents of the city of Kharkiv also honored the memory of St. Demetrius the Great Martyr and firmly believed in his protection against external enemies; therefore, during the calamitous period of Tatar raids, on the outskirts of the city, around 1689, they built a wooden church dedicated to this saint as “the great protector in times of trouble, who conquers the nations.” And the hopes of the people of Kharkiv were not put to shame. The Tatars, while ravaging the outskirts, repeatedly advanced toward Kharkiv, but through the intercession of St. Demetrius the Great Martyr and thanks to brave commanders, they were always repelled. This first wooden church, which had fallen into disrepair by 1764, was dismantled and replaced with another wooden one; however, on November 19, 1804, the latter—due to an unextinguished candle thrown into a box, burned to the ground, along with all its furnishings, sacristy, and icons; and only a few days after the fire, an undamaged icon of the Mother of God Odigitria of Smolensk, painted on wood, was found in the ashes.
