The Church of The Beheading of St. John the Baptist in Kharkiv was built by architect A. Ton in 1857 and rebuilt by A. Podyakov in 1875.

This church is the only Orthodox church in Ukraine with a stained-glass iconostasis.

The iconostasis was originally crafted in 1905 in Munich, in F. Zettler’s workshop. It was intended for the private chapel of A. Yuzefovich, owner of the newspaper *Yuzhny Krai*. The chapel was located in the building at Sumska Street, 13.

During the interwar years, this unique iconostasis was kept in the Museum of Atheism and was transferred to the Church of The Beheading of St. John the Baptist in 1943, when divine services resumed there. The church survived even after the cemetery on which it stood was destroyed. The stained-glass window is best seen during services, when the backlighting is turned on. The church’s murals date from the restoration period of the 1970s; particularly noteworthy is a copy of Ivanov’s painting “The Appearance of Christ to the People,” scaled to fit the size of the church wall. Another famous stained-glass iconostasis from Zettler’s workshop was located in the Church of St. Julian of Tarsus in Tsarskoye Selo near St. Petersburg—but it has not survived.

The church is located in Youth Park at Alchevskyh Street, 50A.
