House of Hermann Helfferich

Great building of the National Academy of Legal Sciences, located at the address: Hryhoriia Skovorody Street, 70, was mush smaller originally.

It was built in 1896 according to the design of architect Serhiy Zagoskin; this mansion was two-story.

The building was enlarged in the late 1940s. It housed a kindergarten. The building was again significantly reconstructed and expanded in the early 2000s. Then an L-shaped wing was added to it, and the facade was reconstructed according to the project of the architectural and construction company “Makrostroy”.

The first owner, Hermann Khrystyanovich Helfferich, was the brother of the famous industrialist and philanthropist Maximilian Helfferich, known primarily for the agricultural machinery factory of the Hellferich Sade Society. Heinrich Helfferich was listed in the 1909 list of homeowners as the owner of the plot on which the house was built.

Hermann Helfferich, according to an advertisement in the Kharkiv Calendar of 1888, owned a forwarding and commission office, a representative office of Russian and foreign trading houses and factories. It was located at Rybna Street, 28.

The building was significantly damaged by a Russian missile strike on January 23, 2024.
